How to get started with SUP: 5 expert tips

Stand-up paddle boarding, or SUP, is a relatively easy sport to pick up. Most surf schools along the beach have gear that you can rent or buy a punch card for and all you need to bring is yourself.

Here are some tips for getting started:

1. Choose the right board

When selecting a board, make sure to choose one that is appropriate for your skill level and the conditions you'll be paddling in. If you’re not sure which one is right for you, ask the owner of the club you’re renting the board from

2. Start in calm waters

It's best to begin in calm, flat water until you feel comfortable and confident on the board. In Israel this means staying inside the jetties that sprinkle most of Israel’s coastline or opting for a SUP experience on a flat body of water like the Jordan River or Sea of Galilee

3. Stand up correctly

Start on your knees and only when you feel confident, stand up on your board with your feet parallel and hip-distance apart, your toes pointing forward, a slight bend in your knees, and your line of vision about 2 meters from the nose of your board.

4. Keep your core engaged

Engaging this muscle group is the secret to helping you stay balanced on your board.

5. Use correct paddle technique

Technique is just as much about equipment as it is about maneuvering in the water. That means using the right length paddle for your height and making sure to paddle with your core, not just your arms.

By following these tips, you'll be well on your way to a fun and successful SUP experience in Israel.
